Edison Market Gallery
Edison Market Gallery is large format public gallery space on the west facing side of the new Edison Market (formerly Family Dollar) that houses 5 frames for custom mini murals painted on recycled billboard material. The gallery will showcase 2 exhibitions a year, painted by 5 artists from our paid Artist in Residency Program. For more details on this program, read below. Each residency and corresponding exhibition will be celebrated as a part of the Washington Avenue Arts and Culture Crawl in the Summer and Fall. This gallery wall has been made possible by Edison Neighborhood Association, Edison Market, Eyes On Edison creator Sabine Ledieu and local artist Jane Schelhaus; as well as our participating artists!

Spring Show 2025: "Together WE Turn the Tides of Chaos"
Created TOGETHER, WE highlight the talent and passion of our local artists. Turning a Tide of Chaos takes unity, inclusivity, peace, hope and vision. This installation shines a light on what we can achieve in our community when we come together with purpose and love.

Meet the Artists and their Murals
Facilitating Artist: Sabine Ledieu

Sabine Ledieu is a a Canadian eco artists based here in Kalamazoo who works with recycled and found materials to spread awareness of environmental issues through art. Much of her work is in sculpted metals as an homage to her work as a welder. She is also the mind behind Eyes on Edison, a series of murals hung throughout the Edison neighborhood. Sabine champions the philosophy that artists should have accessible places to work in community in order to share ideas and broaden their individual skill sets and that art can be done in a grassroots "DIT" way, using what is already available and making it visible to as many people as possible.

"Be the light you hope to find in the dark"
When the world around us seems turbulent, chaotic, and dark, it can make you feel hopeless and alone. Fear, anger, and isolation manifest into monsters and without intervention they can overwhelm us into despair. We often search outwardly for any sign of hope that we can cling to, that things will be ok. When we turn that search for hope inward and realize our inner light can illuminate the darkness, we are able to identify and overcome the monsters. In this act, you become a beacon of light that draws others to your source and in that empowering community with unity and liberation, strengthening and amplifying each other, turning the tides of chaos towards hope.

"Animkiig" (Ojibwe for Thunderbirds)
ThunderBird, know to be one of the strongest spiritual beings for the Ojibwe tribe with Native American origins, and was said to exist in the great lake regions. It is known to be the bringer of transformation and urging individuals to embrace the transformative energies in their lives. Said to be the punisher of humans who brake moral rules. I have included the seed of life, representing creation, unity and equality, and that we all start from the same.
With two arrows crossing over the American flag, the arrows are know in the Native American community to represent friendship. Framing the image with sky bands to show that we are all ready to head towards happiness.

"Embracing chaos"
In a world of chaos, it will always be knocking at our back door. Take the chaos and thrive in it. Turn the chaos to your advantage. Rise up and shine bright. Be the shield that protects yourself and the ones you love. Embrace the chaos and never let it take command over you.

"The Time of Monsters" by Radley An
Before humanity had mapped out the entirety of Earth, cartographers illustrated monsters in the margins of maps to signify unknown, dangerous waters. Today, while the waters we fare are uncharted--unprecedented, even--the monsters we encounter are not. Like clockwork, these monsters regularly threaten to crush and devour those of us caught in their mechanisms. Similarly, the unknown waters we navigate threaten to pull us apart, to wash us away in their wake. Our hands reach out for help, but in isolation, there is none to be found. Unless we reach for each other, we will be consumed, torn asunder by wave and monster alike.

"Dreamflight"
Dreamflight is a visual tribute to the transcendent spirit of Pegasus, soaring boldly through the chaos in a dance of color, energy, and transformation. This piece is a portal to that sacred space where imagination, resilience, and the soul's yearning for freedom converge. She represents our untethered spirit and the divine force of creativity that allows us to reimagine our lives when all seems lost. The ascent of Pegasus through cosmic currents and crashing tides reflects a refusal to be bound by circumstance and mirrors our own capacity to turn pain into power and confusion into clarity. Through this work, I offer a visual reminder that we are beings of both matter and magic - and that our spirits, like Pegasus, are meant to fly freely, guided by vision, uplifted by purpose, and illuminated by the creative force within us all.

"commUNITY"
This piece represents togetherness.
We are all part of one another, made from the same particles.
We need to help lift each other up so that we can all benefit from each other's skills.

“I SEE YOU”
In this painting, each character represents a different group of people.
From white to black, old to young, those in transition to the tiniest of creatures that can have a global impact.
Often, you can be next to someone and still feel alone. But if we take the time to ‘see’ each other without fear or judgement we can coalesce.
I see you for what you are, who are and you are seen.
Together, we turn the tide of chaos.
